A New New Yorker | A Writer in New York | Tale 3

Well goddamn, it’s been awhile.

I always used to twist A’s arm a bit about not putting enough time into this blog and she would always tell me it’s because she didn’t have enough time. I would sort of roll my eyes and ask my mom what she’s so busy with, but she never knew either. I don’t think I understood this concept of lack of time until I moved to New York.

IMG_6605

I don’t know what it is about this city but it truly consumes you. All your energy and all of your time. You get so stuck in your day-to-day life and trying your best to take any free time you do have to sprinkle in some stuff from your New York City bucket list (or binge watch Netflix because sometimes a girls just gotta relax and turn her brain off). All of this leaves you tired, drained and honestly – not really wanting to exert your brain in trying to write a blog post that is the perfect amount of analytics, truth and wit.

It’s funny, really. I always thought this city would inspire me. Well, it definitely does it some ways, just not the ways I expected or wanted it to. I thought it would bring out this artistic, creative talent that was hidden inside of me, waiting for the right place to unlock it. I envisioned myself spending weekends at various coffee shops writing or working in Photoshop, drinking black coffee and fawning over men in turtle necks. But instead New York City has unlocked the determined fighter in me. The one who works her butt off at work, and pushes through throngs of people near Penn Station only to come home and squat her butt off in the gym. The one who is fixated on having it all – a killer job, a fit bod, a bustling social life, at least two planned vacations at a time and time to attend any and all the New York specific events she can.

You can imagine that in trying to do it all, the first few things that drop off your “to do” list are the ones that take the most heart, soul and mind. And for me that’s writing. It’s a shame because out of everything, writing is probably the one thing I want to be working on the most. But for some reason, New York won’t let me.

I think the problem is that in New York, I keep myself so busy that I don’t have time to truly assess and explore my feelings. I feel something for a second and then I’m thrown into a new project at work, forced to re-route my way home to avoid a rowdy group of men on the sidewalk or running out the door to meet up with friends and down a bottle of champagne at brunch.

I thought that this is what writers did. I thought they lived their lives to write about them. Instead I’m finding that it’s hard to do both. There’s being a writer (experiencing things that you plan to write about but never really finding the time to do so) and then there’s being a writer (focusing less on doing things you can write about and actually putting pen to paper). And I want to be one.

Love,

K

Goodness. TGIF, am I right? This week has been an intense one. Who would’ve thought 2015 would get off to such a crazy start! In honor of a weekend off to play, explore, and get inspired, we wanted to share a few things that we’ve been loving lately.

A

Since the only places I’ve been exploring lately are my work email inbox and my client’s conference rooms, I’ve been low on the Jointly-acceptable fun-stuff. But one thing I’ve still be on, is stalking my favorite personalities on Instagram (primarily during plane taxi-ing). Here are a few profiles I’ve been loving (both new loves, and old loves):

1. R.M. Drake brings poetry into the world of Instagram. He’s a writer and Etsy shop owner, and his work is just beautiful. Such a welcome interruption to the regularly eye-candy oriented content. Makes you stop, read, and consider life.

2. Witchoria does the same thing as @rmdrk for me. Makes me break out of my idle scroll. Her content is just as haunting as it is beautiful. It’s dark, but I’m okay with that. Life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows, and I appreciate people who can address the good and the bad.

3. Protect Your Magic is actually an online shop with amazing products that all don the line “Protect Your Magic.” A friend of mine from Mother actually re-grammed a photo recently, and I spent the next hour (and stayed up way too late) looking at all of the awesome products in the PYM shop and pondering her message:

We all have a magic about us. A magic that we should project but protect at the same time. Mine is my loyalty.. thats my magic. Whats your magic and how do you protect it?

1. This face map that tells your exactly why you have that random breakout

2. Can you imagine cuddling in this sweater, wooo-eeee!

3. This empowering article for women and minorities found on Cleveland Craine’s – it’s just a perk that it’s about my dad!

4. Thanks to my lovely friend R, yesterday I discovered that the Apple Store hosts a ton of great events. I switched my night plans around yesterday to attend Eating with Your Eyes: Chicago Food Authority. Basically this was a Q&A hosted by the super charming Samantha Roby. Topics covered included, but were not limited to – her path to creating Chicago Food Authority, how to take the best photos for Instagram, and how to not give a sh*t when you have to stand on a chair at a 5 star restaurant to get a good photo. As I like to say, #doitforthelikes.

While I can’t say that I learned anything new, it was super inspiring and exciting to be in a room filled with many of Chicago’s finest content curators. That being said, I’ve already cleared tonight to attend another similar event!

Hope you find some time to get inspired this weekend.

Goosebumps

Hi everyone!

I have a little something for your Monday blues. I’m super stoaked to publish this month’s (uhh…okay fine, and last month’s) playlist!

I don’t think I’ve ever put so much thought and effort into a playlist in my life. I found the first song and immediately fell in love, and I’ve spent the past few weeks hunting for other artists with the same feel.

It wasn’t an easy task, but I’m really proud of this one. It’s a compilation of (mostly) recent discoveries that are so beautiful, dark, and twisted, they give me goosebumps. I may have found some inspiration in Serial…okay, I definitely did.

Hope you love it as much as I do!

Fall With Me | September 2014 Playlist

Hi everyone!

Hope you had a wonderful Labor Day Weekend and that your long weekend turns into a quick, short week!

So, as promised, I’ve put together a new playlist of songs for the month of September. This one is comprised of softer, acoustic songs. These are songs we love to listen to year-round, but especially while watching leaves change golden brown in fall. I also made sure to put a few of A’s favorite songs in this playlist since it’s her birthday month.

So, here it is: Fall With Me | SEPT ’14

Hope you enjoy it!

Love,

DIM (Did It Myself)

I’m going to go ahead and skip over the apologizes for not writing thing time, it seems like all A and I do is apologize for our lack of writing. But I will say, in my defense, that I’ve been battling some severe arm/hand pain for the past two weeks and have thus, been unable to type, write, and even feed myself. That being said, I couldn’t bare to leave you guys hanging any longer.

What have we been up to?

As far as I’m concerned, I’ve been pretty much on bed/couch rest for awhile now. Which has given me ample time to get very well acquainted with HGTV’s current line of shows. A girl can only watch so many Friends reruns (not true, I could watch Friends reruns for years and never tire of them).

Anyways, my HGTV obsession has led to an entirely new obsession – interior decorating and DIY. Obviously in my current state I can’t be gutting kitchens. So I’ve started a few minor projects for my (in the very near) future apartment. Here’s what (mom and) I did…

IMG_2917

And here is how I did it…

Step 1: Collect old bottles and jars of various shapes and spray paint. We chose Rustoleum‘s metallic line and it worked really well!

IMG_5787

 Consider using these bad boys…

IMG_8788Step 2: Apply spray paint to the bottles and jars. Keep the paint cans 8-10 inches away from bottles/jars and apply coats lightly. If you press too hard, the paint will run and leave drip marks. Mom couldn’t really get the hold of this.

And here’s how I’ve been using them…

really love them, even though it made my hands feel a lot worse and I don’t have an amazing little city apartment to put them all in (yet)! They were super easy and a great way to repurpose things that are too pretty to be wasted.

Love,

(Getting Over) Hump Day

It’s hump day, guys.

So this week is a little crazy for both of us. I have like a thirty things going on at once and…well…I wish I could tell you more about A’s life right now but we haven’t even had time to catch up. It’s safe to say a little push is definitely needed to get over the hump and power through for the rest of the week.

Whenever I have a lot of studying to do, my tumblr activity always sky-rockets. There is no better break than getting lost in my dream world of clothes, food, amazingly decorated rooms, cityscape photos, and killer quotes.

So…welcome to my (dream) world.

A’s world is a little different. She’s more about the dream pets, the sun & moon, flowers, books, and wanderlust.

You can check her Tumblr out here.
